On this half-day tour, learn about the town of Alice Springs and how it has evolved into the central hub of the Australian outback. Australia’s most famous outback town is now the central headquarters to a range of services and a thriving tourism industry. Established by the early explorers, Alice Springs began as a repeater station along the Overland Telegraph Line. Visit the School of Air, which provides education to primary aged school children living on remote properties throughout the Northern Territory.
The historic Telegraph Station was built in 1872 to relay messages between Darwin and Adelaide and is the site of the first European settlement in Alice Springs. You will also visit the home and headquarters of the highly respected Royal Flying Doctor Service, who deliver medical services to people who live, work and travel in remote and rural Australia. Stop in at the Alice Springs Reptile Centre, which is home to the largest reptile display in Central Australia. Get very close to enormous goannas and frill-neck lizards, and be introduced to Terry the saltwater crocodile.
The Gecko Cave features a large collection of gecko species from all over the Northern Territory. Visit historic Anzac Hill; originally dedicated to the many men and women who lost their lives during WWI, it now honours all those who have served in wars in which Australia has played a role.
Make the most of your Day with an Optional Add-On to Alice Springs Desert Park, which starts at 8:00 AM. It’s home to a vast range of plants and wildlife native to the area. You can really experience the beauty and diversity of this incredible landscape. The Arrernte people, traditional owners of the park, are also on hand to share their local wisdom and knowledge. Before leaving the park, be sure to visit the Nocturnal House and Birds of Prey presentation.
