The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s natural wonders and is on just about every visitor’s bucket list. Stretching more than 2300 kilometres from Bundaberg to Cape York, it is the largest coral reef system in the world and can even be seen from space.
More than just a collection of corals, the Reef is also home to a stunning array of marine life like colourful tropical fish, dolphins, coral sponges, whales and turtles, as well as hundreds of types of birds. Because of its beauty and the importance of the ecosystem, the Great Barrier Reef has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981.
With so many corals and islands to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Head to the Outer Reef for snorkelling or diving with good visibility and open ocean.
If you want to spend more time in the water and less time travelling in a boat, go for the closer Inner Reef options. This is also a better choice if you’ve got kids or want a relaxed snorkelling experience, with white sandy beaches and shallow tropical waters.
Whatever you choose, prepare to be stunned by the magnificent beauty of the Great Barrier Reef.
